Top 10 SEO Mistakes That Are Killing Your Rankings
Oasis Web Services
SEO can feel like trying to hit a moving target while blindfolded, with Google occasionally moving the target for fun. The good news is that most small business websites are not held back by anything mysterious. They are held back by a handful of common, fixable mistakes.
Here are the ten we see most often, and what to do about each one.
1. Ignoring mobile
Google ranks your site based on its mobile version. If your pages are hard to read or use on a phone, your rankings suffer on every device.
The fix: use a responsive design, keep text readable without zooming and make buttons easy to tap. Test on a real phone on mobile data. Our responsive design guide covers the details.
2. Slow pages
Slow pages frustrate visitors and Google measures speed as part of its page experience signals (opens in a new tab).
The fix: compress images and use modern formats like WebP, remove plugins you do not use, avoid autoplay videos on the homepage and use good hosting. Check your progress with PageSpeed Insights (opens in a new tab).
3. Thin or generic content
A services page that says "We offer quality services at competitive prices" tells Google, and your customers, absolutely nothing. Every business on earth offers quality services at competitive prices. Allegedly.
The fix: write useful, specific pages. Explain what each service includes, who it is for, how it works, what it roughly costs and the questions customers usually ask.
4. Neglecting local SEO
For most small businesses, the customers that matter are nearby. If Google doesn't know where you work, it can't show you to people searching "near me".
The fix:
- Claim and complete your Google Business Profile (opens in a new tab), with photos, services and opening hours
- Ask happy customers for reviews, and reply to them
- Mention the towns and areas you serve on your website
- Keep your business name, address and phone number identical everywhere
5. Keyword stuffing
"Our London plumber plumbs London's plumbing for London plumbing customers in London." Search engines have been wise to this for over a decade, and readers find it unbearable.
The fix: write naturally for people. Use the words customers would search for in your page title, heading and opening paragraph, then just write well.
6. Ignoring user experience
If visitors land on your page and leave straight away, it is a sign the page did not give them what they wanted. Cluttered layouts, confusing menus and pop-ups that appear before the page has even loaded all drive people away.
The fix: clear headings, simple navigation, an obvious next step on every page and pop-ups kept to a polite minimum.
7. Forgetting about backlinks
Links from other reputable websites tell Google that people trust you. Many small businesses have almost none.
The fix: focus on quality, not quantity. Get listed with local business groups and trade bodies, ask suppliers and partners to link to you, sponsor a local event, or write something genuinely useful that others want to share. Never buy links. It is the SEO equivalent of buying fake followers, and Google can tell.
8. Never updating old content
A blog post with prices from three years ago or tips about tools that no longer exist does not inspire confidence.
The fix: review your key pages and posts at least once a year. Update facts, prices and examples, and add new questions customers have asked.
9. Overlooking technical SEO
Broken links, missing page titles, duplicate pages, no sitemap and pages accidentally hidden from Google can all quietly hold you back.
The fix: add your site to Google Search Console (opens in a new tab), which is free and flags many of these problems for you. Make sure every page has a unique title and description, fix broken links and submit an XML sitemap.
10. Not measuring results
If you do not measure, you are guessing. Plenty of businesses have no idea which pages bring in enquiries.
The fix: use Google Search Console to see what people search for to find you, and analytics to see what they do on your site. Track form submissions and phone clicks as goals.
SEO is about balance
There is no single trick that gets you to the top of Google. It is the combination of a fast, mobile-friendly site, useful content, strong local signals and a few good links, kept up over time. SEO is a marathon, not a sprint, though thankfully with fewer blisters.
