What Every Business Owner Should Know About Website Hosting & Security
Oasis Web Services
Hosting and security are the least glamorous parts of running a website. Nobody has ever been asked at a party, "So, who's your hosting provider?" But when they go wrong, nothing else about your site matters: a slow or hacked website loses customers, rankings and trust very quickly.
You do not need to become a technical expert. You just need to know enough to ask the right questions.
Why hosting and security matter
Your host is where your website lives. It affects:
- Speed: how quickly pages reach your visitors
- Uptime: how often your site is actually available
- Security: how well it is protected from attacks and data loss
- Rankings: search engines favour fast, secure, reliable sites
Small businesses are a common target, not because attackers care about you personally, but because automated tools scan the whole internet for easy wins. An out-of-date plugin is an open window, and the bots check every house on the street.
Types of hosting
| Type | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Shared | Very small, low-traffic sites | Slowdowns when neighbours get busy |
| VPS | Growing sites that need more power | You or your developer manage it |
| Managed | Businesses that want it handled | Costs more than basic shared |
| Dedicated | Large, high-traffic sites | Expensive and overkill for most |
| Cloud and edge | Fast sites anywhere, with traffic spikes | Needs the right setup |
For most small businesses, managed or cloud hosting gives the best balance of speed, security and peace of mind. Shared hosting is like a flat share: cheap, but you can't control how loud the neighbours are.
What secure hosting should include
When comparing hosts, check for:
- An SSL certificate, so every page loads over HTTPS with the padlock
- A web application firewall to block common attacks
- DDoS protection, so a flood of fake traffic cannot knock you offline
- Daily backups, kept away from the main server, and tested restores
- Malware scanning and clean-up if something gets in
- Automatic security updates for the server software
- Strong access controls, with two-factor authentication for logins
- Monitoring and alerts, so problems are spotted before customers notice
- UK or EU data storage, if you handle personal data
- Real support from people who answer when things go wrong
Security beyond hosting
A good host is only half the story. The rest depends on how your site is built and run:
- Keep your platform, themes and plugins up to date, and remove the ones you do not use
- Use strong, unique passwords and turn on two-factor authentication
- Give each person their own login, with only the access they need
- Protect your forms from spam and abuse
- Collect only the personal data you need, and look after it under UK GDPR
Choosing the right partner
Ask any host or web developer:
- Where is my site hosted, and how fast is it for UK visitors?
- How often are backups taken, and when did you last test a restore?
- Who applies updates, and how quickly?
- What happens if my site is hacked, and is clean-up included?
- How do I reach you in an emergency?
If the answers are vague, that tells you something. "Don't worry about it" is not a backup strategy.
A step-by-step security plan
- List what you have: domain, hosting, website platform, plugins and who has logins.
- Make sure SSL is active and every page uses HTTPS.
- Turn on two-factor authentication for hosting, website and domain accounts.
- Update everything, and remove plugins and themes you do not use.
- Set up automatic daily backups stored off the server.
- Test a restore so you know backups actually work.
- Add a firewall and malware scanning if your host does not include them.
- Protect contact forms against spam.
- Check your privacy policy and cookie banner are in place.
- Write down who to call if something goes wrong.
- Review all of the above every three months.
Common myths
- "We're too small to be targeted." Automated attacks do not check your turnover first.
- "We have SSL, so we're secure." SSL protects data in transit. It does not stop a weak password or an old plugin being exploited.
- "My host does backups, so I'm fine." Check how often, where they are stored and whether anyone has tried restoring one.
- "Security is a one-off job." It is more like brushing your teeth: a little and often.
